Ventura County that could save you! Welcome to the City of Oxnard – the land
of endless strawberry fields and unspoiled beaches.
Let’s start with some Oxnard Facts. Oxnard, California is located about 60
miles northwest of Los Angeles along the California coast and is situated on
the Oxnard Plain where some of the best strawberries in the world are grown.
Add to this the fact that Oxnard enjoys a dry subtropical climate with warm
winters and cool summers and you get not just the perfect strawberry sundae
for dessert but also the perfect vacation getaway!
The City of Oxnard used to be inhabited by the Chumash Native Americans many
years before it was conquered by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo for Spain in 1542.
When California became a state in 1850, Californio settlers lost their
influence and began ranching as American farmers began tilling the soil and
planting lime and barley. Henry T. Oxnard and his three brothers, who used
to own a successful sugar beet factory in Chino, California decided to build
a $2 million sugar beet processing plant on the plain inland from Port
Hueneme (pronounced as “why-nee-mee” which means “resting place” in Chumash).
Oxnard planned to name the area Zachari which is the Greek word for sugar
but it was later on named after him.

The Oxnard Airport (OXR) is a regional airport which serves United Express
flights from Los Angeles and is situated at a comfortable proximity to most
beaches and major attractions in the Oxnard area. It flies to Oxnard about
three times a day for $559. SkyWest Airlines (which operates United Express)
however, announced in early 2010 that it would cease flying to Oxnard by
June, 2010.
But if you prefer land transportation, Ventura Shuttle operates shuttles
services to Oxnard from the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) seven
times a day for at least $35. Most buses and trains such as Amtrak,
Greyhound, Union Pacific and Metrolink also stop by Oxnard making it
Southern California’s major transportation hub.

Oxnard is home to some of the most beautiful yet not so crowded beaches in
California since it does not get as much attention as other coastal cities
in California do. Beaches in Oxnard are quite large and the sand is
particularly softer as compared to other beaches. Though Oxnard beaches have
very few rocks, they are known to have very dangerous rip currents which
beach bums should watch out for.
Oxnard has a myriad of museums in its enclave that would make art
enthusiasts squeal with glee. For one, there is the Carnegie Art Museum
which features eclectic artworks made by 20th century California artists
such as Arthur Beaumont, Colin Campbell Cooper, Leo Politi, and Millard
Sheets. Car lovers would also fall in love with Oxnard’s Murphy Auto Museum
which features a collection of over 50 cars ranging from antique cars to
1970’s vintage automobiles.
